STREET INTERVENTION

ENBE Assignment 4 - Group

For our final project, We are required to construct ideas on street intervention based on the conducted site study. As a group of 6, we are assigned to a site in KL and therefore, to conduct a site study where an investigation is carried out through site observation. We are then needed to prepare a site inventory (data collection) and evaluation of the site and street. From the chosen site, we need to select a street (choose secondary road) and conduct a thorough investigation and propose an idea for street intervention. We are to present all gathered information in 4-6 A1 Boards with a 2D Pop-Up Model.

Objectives of this project

1. To extend knowledge of the built environment at its basic unit, form and function.

2. To understand the interrelation between built environment and its users.

3. To question, analyse and articulate the impact by the built environment.

WORK PROGRESS

We started this project by looking and identifying the streets by doing virtual pre-visits using Google Maps and Google Earth found in the area we were assigned to, which is Pasar Seni. After a good amount of discussion through Skype, we decided with 2 streets options to discuss with our lecturers during tutorial session before going off to our site. The 2 streets we had was Jalan Petaling and Jalan Tun H S Lee. The lecturers opted for Jalan Tun H S Lee.

A few days before our site visit, we made a lists of items to check off and printed tons of maps to help us during our site investigation. On the day itself, we took many shots of the surroundings and jot down litlle details that happen throughout the day such as shadows, facade of the buildings, sun and wind path and many more.

After the site visit, we went back and begin the layout of the presentation boards on butter paper for the first feedback from our tutors during tutorial sessions. Ms Reene constantly told us to ask ourselves why did we put that information or is it relevant for our intervention ideas. We went back to our site again to fill up more details and information that we missed out from our last site visit and again, tweaked our boards here and there.

The most vigorous challenge we faced in this project was to propose a justifiable intervention idea that either harmonises with the surrounding or a total contrast from it. All the previous ideas was rejected by our lecturers as they do not meet the expectation of the lecturers and functionality of the intervention.

With the last 2 weeks before presentation, we finalised the early parts of the boards with colours and information. With all these done, it left us 5 days to think of a viable intervention idea. We were very lost and anxious about all the little details that when we brainstormed, everyone rejected each and every ideas we can come up with. It was with the help and guidance from our senior, who gave us tips that we were right back on track and grind the days to quickly complete our intervention boards and 2D Pop-Up Model.

REFLECTION

With the completion of the final assignment of the semester, I was able to learn to identify and to describe the elements or components of built environment through observation and site investigation. I learnt the way to analyse the function of the elements in built environment in the city setting as well as initiate ideas on built environment through observation, data collection, evaluation and deliver them by using different media/tools/techniques with my team members.

I have learnt all the details about a street and the area like the components of a street and its area, the facade of the buildings, zoning of a city area, 5 senses, culture and activities in the street, vehicular and pedestrian circulation and many more. I also learnt how to build models which were quite challenging for me. The team managed to think out of the box and use their  creative thinking skills in choosing the materials used for the street model. I also gained a few techniques in making models and learnt from the mistakes of poor workmanship for some aspects of the 2D model.

To wrap it all up, I am very grateful that I have exposure to this type of project as it definitely would benefit in the long tun, especially for Architecture degree, where we would often do investigations and analysis like these. I really do benefit much from it.
