MINIATURE SHELTER IN NATURE

ENBE Assignment 2 - Group

From the previous lecture and discussion on earth system/components and natural environment, as a group, we are to extend your knowledge through research and to choose 1 or a combination of 2 of the earth components below as your main natural setting of site.

From the chosen natural setting above, we are to find a main suitable site, (approx. 2500mm x 2500mm size) and within the chosen main site, you need to select a shelter site (approx. 500-1000mm x 500-1000mm). The miniature shelter shall be in the shelter site and we are required to do a site study including site survey, site inventory and site analysis upon the selected site.

At the same time, each group will be assigned to an animal lego character and concurrently while conducting the site selection and study, each group need to study and consider the needs/essentials of the character in terms of its nature and adaptation. Explanation and justification are required upon interrelation of character and selection site.

Objectives of this project

1. To extend knowledge of the natural elements at its basic unit, form and function

2. To understand the interrelation between natural elements and manmade elements

3. To question, analyse and articulate the impact towards the natural environment

WORK PROGRESS

My group consist of Me, Gordon, Ashley Lau, Samantha Ng, Cheng Howe, Ziting, Katherine and Areesa. We travelled to Janda Baik to investigate and analyse a suitable site for our miniature shelter.

We started out the project by looking at the needs of Bellwether in a natural setting. After that, we chose a main site according to the natural setting we decided upon and start marking the site's boundary with vines and stones.

We took note of the condition of our site before and after we made modifications towards the site. We then did a thorough site study including site survey, site inventory and site analysis upon the selected site. We carefully establish a miniature shelter for the assigned character using lego blocks given by our lecturers-in-charge. We made 2 options of the shelter to let the tutors to decide which is better during tutorial sessions.

After we left the site for good, my team started to draft the layouts of our presentation boards on butter paper. After the feedback given by the tutors, we then give a catchy title for our site and change our layout as it was not interesting or it doesn't contain any information related to our project's objective. Mid-way we decided to transfer into drawing blocks as we felt we may not have sufficient time to complete the boards in time.

Reaching for the final tutorial session, Ms Reene gave us the feedback to rearrange the layout again and sequence our topics/sections more smoothly with information connectivity throughout the boards. We had 2 days left before our presentation and we grind once again but we were able to finish on time.

REFLECTION

At the completion of this project, I have learnt to differentiate the characteristic and the quality of natural elements by looking at the natural components, elements, topography and landscape by site observation. I also learned how to analyse the function of the natural elements and built environment by looking at the natural elements, topography and landscape through site analysis. Besides, the team brainstormed to initiate ideas that relate to natural elements through observation, data collection, evaluation and deliver them by using different media/tools/techniques.

Through this project,I have learnt how to make an infographic poster. I also get to gain more knowledge about minimising words or paragraphs, writing down in bullet points instead. I also learned to speak more confidently and verbally fluent to the assessors, to better reduce the moments of awkwardness during presentations.

In conclusion, it was very challenging to produce the boards as it was the first time doing so and getting rejected twice to rearrange our board's layout. We faced some obstacles along the way but in the end we managed to bring ourselves together to prevent failure or feeling left out.
